The degree of Humanities and Communications is an academic unit with its own dynamic entrepreneurial character, born in 1984 as the degree of Social Communications, one of the four founding degrees of the University. In 1988 two more degrees were offered at the higher technical level: Graphic Design and Journalism, for which this unit became the Academic Department of Communications and afterwards in 1996, as part of the reorganization of the University it gave way to the School of Social Communications.
In 1997, the degree of Psychology was created and in 2004 it grew to offer two other degrees in Design and Fashion Management, therefore re-accommodating the name as the School of Humanities and Communications, encompassing the social-humanistic character of the University.
A special transcendental fact for the School was its change of orientation from the degree of Social Communications that in 2005 adopted a new Study Plan and transformed into the degree of Strategic and Corporative Communications.
In the three decades and a little more, the degrees in the School have gone through curricular renovation processes with the purpose of maintaining its knowledge base and disciplined practice up-to-date and responding to the requirements of society.
The processes of self-evaluation have been frequent and enriching both in management and academic quality. The latter was carried out under the CINDA criteria in 2015. The results served as the basis for the curricular re-designing of all the degrees in the School of Humanities and Communications and were applied starting in the first semester of 2017. These new Study Plans were prepared by the Ministry of Education and for which opinions and recommendations were considered from graduates, students, employers, professionals in the field, professors and University and School authorities.
The complex social and technological global and national scenarios have had an incidence in the orientation and content of the professional profiles and actions of the School. The use of new technologies in information and communications have been strengthened, critical thinking has been deepened, intercultural communications, the respect for diversity, gender equilibrium and the responsible and active participation of citizens has been promoted.
